HISTORIES

The Market Theatre
Born in 1976, days after the Soweto Uprising, the Market Theatre quickly became a symbol of South Africa’s fight against Apartheid. Nearly 50 years later, it remains a driving force in indigenous South African theatre, boldly telling African stories and winning numerous awards for its courage, integrity, and artistic excellence. In 1995, the Market Theatre became the first non-U.S. theatre to receive the Jujamcyn Theatre Award, honoured for ‘it having proved that art can change a society’. As South Africa marks 30 years of democracy, the Market Theatre continues to deliver relevant, diverse, and impactful programming.
